Paypal and Payoneer no longer work in my country, so I can't get money from Ko-fi, Gumroad, Buymeacoffe and ComicAd (the ad banners here).
The only tip jar I have left is Boosty. It accepts Paypal, all cards, any currency, then it converts it into rubles and sends to me. Boosty works the same way as Patreon + accepts one-time donations like Ko-fi and allows selling ebooks.

People who lack emotional empathy have to develop cognitive empathy instead if they want to functuion properly in society. That includes a lot of learning: facial expressions, gestures, tones of voice, etc. All the stuff empaths understand instinctively. Local sociopaths teach their kids well. We see little Rita here with her parents. Ren draws the pictures, Lara explains them. Types of smiles were especially hard for her. Difference between fake and real (Duchenne) smile is subtle. Another memory here is 12 year old Tim who Rita's nurse at the time. Tim is not even a pure empath, he's just close to that side of the empathic spectrum, yet he impressed her enough that she began to question herself.

Did the Ancients come up with some crazy genetic engineering so that these people would "breed true" rather than be watered down over the generations? Or is Rita more
"normal" than her great-great-great-great(etc.)grandmother?

No, nothing crazy there. Sociopathic brain build is common for chiefs just because only people having it can master core psi profiles and therefore become chiefs. As to the other traits (supersoldier stuff), I'll explain how they are inherited without being watered down in book 3. The explanation is very simple but I don't want to spoil it anyway.
