Elie answers with what she thought was a neutral phrase, but it appears she's hit a bullseye. The boy looks astonished: he's just met a real kid! wow! Elie is bewildered. There are lots of very young people in the streets, but for some reasons the boy says they are no real kids.
Figures on the last panel has no faces for a reason. The world Elie sees now is made of her memories, very distant ones at that. Some details are blurred, some are missing. That's why facial features of people in the crowd are indistinguishable. All she knows and remembers about them is that they all were young males.
