Jan's eyes were destroyed by his own immune system in a cytokine storm. The process included inflammation, pain, fever, and bloody tears, also, Jan must've scratched at them at some point, so they're not a pretty sight.

The islanders are not religious so they have no concept of afterlife. The Mutes are kind of spiritual, though, and do have such concept. mostly because of their ancestors who grew up knowing about artificial immortality and memory transfer. Nikt is a son of a Mute shaman, hense his unusual wishes to his dead brother.

Comments:

Religious or not, watching somebody pass is bound to make one more pensive than usual about the whole mortality thing we're saddled with and the mysteries only the dead can know. It's just human nature.

It's not only a human thing. Any species intelligent enough mourns their dead. Elephants, apes, dogs, etc. And you're right, religion is not necessary here.

Oof, as creepy as Jan was this page hits you weirdly hard. I blame the drawing quality.

It was a difficult page to draw; stirred some old memories of mine.
Hmmm... do we feel sorry for Jan here? Maybe it's Nikt that makes us feel this way.
